The statement was made in statements to the press, before participating, as a speaker, in the Open Day on January 13th – Freedom and Democracy Day – promoted by the MpD parliamentary group, under the motto: “Principles and Values of the MpD : Current affairs, results and differentiation from opponents”.

“The principles and values of the MpD remain current and had results expressed in a certain peaceful revolution that was carried out during those years and which is still recognized today”, noted the former Prime Minister of Cape Verde

For Carlos Veiga, it is these principles and values that define what MpD is and which, therefore, must continue to be cultivated, because they have already proven that they correspond to a political, social and economic reality and with solutions for the country.

Asked about what memories he brings back from the first 13th of January, he said it was a “fantastic” experience and to this day the 90s are recognized for being one of profound reforms that took Cape Verde to a level of international credibility.

“I consider myself privileged to have lived in that time (…) but I don’t miss it because the world evolves and generations follow one another. Now is the time for the new generation. We did our part. Our generation delivered an enriched legacy to new generations”, he concluded

The opening of the MpD Open Day, commemorating January 13th - Freedom and Democracy Day - was presided over by the party's vice-president, Luís Filipe Tavares and the closing was in charge of Paulo Veiga, president of the parliamentary group.

January 13th is the date on which, for the first time, in 1991, Cape Verdeans exercised their right to vote in the first multi-party elections, after 15 years under a single-party regime.

The first multiparty elections in the archipelago were won by the MpD, the party that returned to power in 2016 after 15 years in opposition and with which the date is most associated.
