Fábio Vieira, who is in São Tomé and Príncipe to participate in the closing conference of the Holistic Reinforcement Project for Sustainable Development (Rehdes), will meet with the head of the La Ribeira Consortium, on the sidelines of the conference and in the capacity of president of the Association of the Municipalities of Fogo and Brava, who will take over from September.

“On the sidelines of this conference, I will have a meeting with the president of the Consórcio de la Ribeira in the region of Valencia, Spain, in order to analyze and study the opportunity for cooperation in the field of solid waste management”, said Fábio Vieira, stressing that it was inaugurated the first phase of the inter-municipal controlled landfill of Monte Geneva in the municipality of São Filipe.

According to him, until now, neither the council of Mosteiros nor that of Santa Catarina do Fogo have taken advantage of the controlled landfill because, he explained, the two municipalities are upstream of this infrastructure and there must be compensatory measures for that to happen.

Fábio Vieira said that the La Ribeira Consortium has opened and the Saturday meeting will study the possibilities and see which project can be defined as a priority to resolve the issue of solid waste management in the Fogo/Brava Region.

The mayor added that Mosteiros, as co-applicant of the Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development project financed by the European Union, learned and got to know other models and sustainable practices of solid waste management, a “global challenge”, being in a position to apply and import some models to improve the collection system and promote the environmentally sustainable municipality.
