São Nicolau: President of the Republic concerned about the “desertification” of the island due to the departure of young people
The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, expressed his concern today about the “desertification” of the island of São Nicolau, due to the departure of young people, and highlighted the urgent need for economic, social and cultural revitalization of the island.

Speaking to the press, after a meeting with the president of the Ribeira Brava Municipal Council, José Maria Neves, he stated that “São Nicolau needs a new life” and highlighted that solutions must be found to contain the massive exodus of young people from the island.
“The island is becoming deserted. Many people, especially young people, are leaving the island and it is important to find solutions so that people do not abandon the island, so that there is no bleeding and so that the economy, social and cultural life of the island can function well.
In this sense, the Head of State highlighted that the “big issue has to do with transport”, despite acknowledging that “there have been improvements in recent months”, but stressed the need to continue this effort so that the island has air and sea connectivity.
“So that with more transport, more mobility, more arrivals to the island of São Nicolau, there can be more investment opportunities, more companies and more opportunities for people and, in this way, more life here on the island of São Nicolau”, he added.
José Maria Neves visited religious confessions in the municipality of Ribeira Brava today.
The President of the Republic began his “Presidency on the Island” today in São Nicolau, an initiative that aims to reinforce the Head of State's commitment to maintaining a close relationship with the populations, listening to their needs, learning about the dynamics of the various sectors of activity and working together to gradually improve the quality of life of all Cape Verdeans.
During the initiative, which will last until Saturday, the 5th, the Head of State will carry out an intense agenda in the two municipalities on the island.
