A strong name on television, radio, press and online media in Cape Verde

Valdir was born in Galinheiro, Fogo, Cape Verde, in 1963. He attended journalism school in both Cape Verde and Russia and began working at Rádio Nacional de Cabo Verde in 1985. In 1989, he immigrated to the United States and settled in area of Brockton, Massachusetts.

In the US, Alves quickly established himself in the field of communications, providing a key connection between the diaspora and the Republic of Cape Verde. He was a producer and presenter of the television program Cabo Vídeo and the radio program Porton de Nos Ilha from 1996 to 2015. Additionally, he was an animator on the program Saudades de Cabo Verde on Rádio Voz de Emigrante and a contributor to the radio program Nha Terra in Boston. He was editor of the online newspaper Caboverdeonline.com. One of the founders and editor of the newspapers Correio de Imigrante and Nos Jornal, he also collaborated with Rádio de Cabo Verde, Televisão de Cabo Verde and Radio France Internationale. Many will also remember Alves as a lively sportscaster who covered countless games.

Valdir was well known in the Cape Verdean-American community and was often invited to present or host at many events. In his personal life, Alves was a sports enthusiast, trained and played football and loved the beach.

For a life dedicated to the highest ideals of journalism, Alves was honored at the Cape Verde Journalists Association's Press Freedom Gala.

José Maria Neves, President of the Republic of Cape Verde, decorated Alves with a Presidential Decree that declared him to be a man of communication who ultimately helped the Cape Verdean community learn more about themselves.
