Brava: Mayor guarantees that measures are being taken to “help” the community of Fajã d´Água

The mayor of Brava announced today that all the necessary measures are already being taken to “rescue” the community of Fajã d´Água as soon as possible, after a landslide that cut off the access road.

Francisco Tavares was speaking in a statement to the press after a landslide which, with the fall of part of a rock and a large volume of earth, ended up taking with it more than 20 meters of the only road connecting to this area.

According to the mayor, normally they were used to small landslides and falling stones, as it is a road with quite high mountains, but what happened later this Saturday afternoon ended up completely isolating this area.

And at this moment, the mayor advanced that the necessary measures are already being taken, where he will move the area and take a message of solidarity to the residents, but also make sure that people who have difficulties in getting around to reach other villages be transferred to the town of Furna via the Coast Guard boat, in order to maintain a little peace of mind, especially for the elderly.

As for the rest of the population that will stay in the area, Francisco Tavares stressed that all measures will be taken in terms of Civil Protection, through the Coast Guard to supply supplies, so that nothing is missing and will ensure that this supply is done as well. through the side path, via Lomba Lomba.

With regard to a solution for this road, he informed that it requires engineering work and technical diagnostic work in the first place and then to take measures in terms of replacement of the road and construction works.

The mayor made it clear that it will be a big work and that it will take some time, but he also informed that at the moment, he is already in contact with the Government of Cape Verde, through the Ministry of Infrastructure, National Service of Civil Protection and Firefighters , Estradas de Cabo Verde, which demonstrated commitment to finding a solution and having car connections back to the locality.

He also advanced that less than two hours after the collapse of this rock, the Minister of Infrastructure got in touch to express her solidarity, but also to leave a message of solidarity for the entire society of Brave, in particular for the residents of the area.

Francisco Tavares also informed that the information he has is that on Monday or Tuesday, a technical team from Estradas de Cabo Verde will travel to the island of Fogo and see the possibility of the Coast Guard ship picking it up at the Fire and bring it to Brava bearing in mind that the situation is an emergency to make the diagnosis and the proposed solution as soon as possible.

Well, he reinforced that this is the only road that connects this community, a “very important” location for the economy of Brave and also for its tourist aspects, but also, for having a population with elderly people and children who study in the Educational Complex of Nova Sintra, there is trade in the area, among other aspects that require the need to take emergency measures.

The locality of Fajã d´Água was isolated at the end of the afternoon of last Saturday, 21st, after a landslide that, in addition to rock and earth, took a section of road with it.

Contacted by Inforpress, the residents assured that there were no more landslides, but that nothing is guaranteed yet taking into account the nature.
