The candidate of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV), Clóvis Silva, said that his party is committed to transforming fishing, agriculture and cattle raising to generate “wealth” and transform Brava Island.

In an interview with Inforpress, the candidate stressed that when creating the platform, first, they looked for Brava's main problems that they want to solve.

According to him, on the island, “unfortunately” 44 percent (%) of the population is considered poor and almost 20% extremely poor.

Hence, they decided to create a platform that generates income on Brava “in fishing, agriculture and cattle raising”.

In fishing, he explained that the platform built an idea that encompasses the existing fishermen and fishmongers, and a fish processing unit.

In this area, they are aligning this project on two fronts. The first, if an investor decides to make private investments, they will be encouraged to do so, or, otherwise, it will be a municipal investment to encourage internal trade and municipal investments, using municipal debt or if the Government is interested in this project, you can invest through public funds.

The second, in the area of agriculture, is linked to the first, which will have a fish processing unit for the production of fish meal and from there, create an animal feed production unit.

“Brava is a rural island and the majority of unemployed people are from rural areas and we have potential here to explore and if we manage to invest in fishing and agriculture we can generate wealth on the island”, he stressed.

From this “wealth”, they will “invest in health and generate opportunities for young people, combat the inactive, unemployment and underemployment”.

In the last municipal elections on September 4, 2016, the seventh held in Cape Verde to choose the holders of municipal bodies in Brava, two candidates ran, with the MpD (Orlando Balla) achieving 1,673 votes (58.99%), and the PAICV (Manuel Gomes) 1,111 votes (39.17%).

For the October 25 municipal elections, a total of 4,830 voters are provisionally registered in the electoral rolls (in 2016 the number of registered voters was 4,435, of which 2,836 voted).

Clóvis Silva is running for mayor of Brava with Francisco Tavares, MpD candidate.
