Local Elections'2024: PAICV wants to return São Lourenço dos Órgãos to the centrality it had in the past

Rui Semedo was speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the public presentation of the PAICV candidates for president of the Municipal Council and the Municipal Assembly of São Lourenço dos Órgãos, respectively, Euclides Cabral and Lúcia Garcia, both career teachers.

“Our focus is on making the most of human, material and cultural resources so that we can give greater dynamism to the development of this municipality (…), which was once a reference in terms of training, animal breeding and with one of the largest fairs on the island of Santiago”, he declared.

He also added that São Lourenço dos Órgãos had one of the most important centers for scientific research in the field of plant varieties, pest control and knowledge transmission.

Situations that, according to him, the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition) wants to reverse if it wins this year's local elections in that municipality, which it led from 2005 to 2016, and from 2005 to 2008 as the installation committee.

“The challenge is to recover the centrality that São Lourenço dos Órgãos had in the past and to become an important municipality in the context of the island and the country”, said Semedo, adding that agriculture, livestock farming and the people of São Lourenço are important for the development of this “essentially agricultural” municipality.

“The most important mission of a municipal council president is to be able to take advantage of existing resources and potential, the municipality’s desires to place it in the process of transformation and development of the municipality”, he argued.

If this happens, he guaranteed that he would be improving the quality of life of his citizens and population, combating poverty and promoting education and well-being.

Along the same lines, the PAICV candidate for the presidency of the Municipal Council of São Lourenço dos Órgãos, Euclides Cabral, reaffirmed that he wants to recover the local authority for the party and chart “a new course” for this municipality in Santiago.

According to the member of the PAICV Regional Political Commission in Santiago Norte and the party's first secretary in São Lourenço dos Órgãos, it is possible to chart “a new course” if the potential and infrastructures existing in the municipality are taken advantage of.

Euclides Cabral also noted that in São Lourenço dos Órgãos there are “areas that deserve to be treated differently”, such as human resources, tourism, infrastructure, education, training, employment, culture, science, agriculture and livestock, areas that, he assured, will be priorities in his electoral platform.

Hence, according to him, if he is elected, he wants to organize the city of João Teves and count on everyone for participatory and inclusive governance, with a focus on the development of this Santiago municipality.

The public presentation of the candidates to PAICV members, friends and supporters, which took place at Luciano Garcia Secondary School, in João Teves, was also attended by party leaders at municipal, regional and national level.

In São Lourenço dos Órgãos, the current mayor, Carlos Vasconcelos, will run for another term on the list of the Movement for Democracy (MpD).
