The Municipality of Brava, the Intermunicipal Water Company (Águabrava) and the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment started the process of distributing self-transported water to minimize the “water shortage” in the most distant areas.

This information was given to Inforpress by the mayor, Francisco Tavares, who explained that the agreement involves three institutions, with the objective of supplying the localities located at the end of the network and that have suffered more with the scarcity of water that is being experienced. experience on Brava.

According to the same source, this crisis is the result of three years of drought and the decrease in water flow at the spring of Encontro.

The most affected localities are Cachaço, Mato Grande, Garça and Baleia.

The municipality informed Águabrava that it will fill up at the MAA in the town of Palhal to later fill the reservoirs closest to the towns with a lack of water.

Thus, he reinforced that the water must travel only from the reservoir in the locality itself to people's homes.

In addition to the agreement for self-transportation of water for human consumption, he informed that another agreement was signed so that, following the mitigation of the bad agricultural year, water for animal consumption was reached.

This part will cover the areas of Cachaço, Campo Baixo, Mato Grande, areas of Mato Riba, which according to the same source, are the locations with the highest concentration of animals.

The mayor explained that the transport will be done twice a week and that the municipality will pay for the driver's salary and fuel, Águabrava provides the tanker truck with a capacity of 11 tons for transport, while the MAA provides the water

This tripartite agreement, according to the mayor, will “minimize the shortage of water for both human consumption and animal consumption”, but recalled that “it never hurts to say that we are going through a serious water crisis and appeal to the population to the very rational use of water in all sectors”.

He informed that the island already has a project by the Government of Cape Verde to be financed by Luxembourg Cooperation, which will solve once and for all the water problem on the island.

However, he stressed that it is a project that will only work in the second half of 2021, if there are no delays and that until this period the “only solution” is to be hopeful about the rains and call for the very rational use of water to overcome this challenge.
