Mário Soares was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a meeting between partners, namely representatives of football schools, school delegation, physical education teachers, among others.

According to the councilor, as long as there are no associations created for different modalities, sport in Brava leaves “a lot to be desired”, as, according to him, something has to be done to improve the practice of sport on the island.

“In the past, there had been some initiatives with the creation of committees for handball, basketball, volleyball and also futsal, but as time went by people started to give up and as a result the activities became less practical”, he noted.

According to the same source, the creation of a nucleus for sports is being seen as a restart of “initiatives”, taking into account that the Brava City Council has been investing heavily in the rehabilitation of sports infrastructures.

“In partnership with the Institute of Sports and Youth (IDJ) and some federations, we will bring some sports training”, he informed.

Hence, it calls on civil society to “strongly” engage in the promotion of sporting activities, as conditions are being created in terms of infrastructure and training.

In this situation, he guaranteed that the city council will be able to mobilize resources by having official groups constituted and also mobilize other partners at national or international level.

Soares also highlighted that the support of parents and guardians is fundamental for children to practice sport because, according to him, we cannot have children playing sport if their parents do not do so.

For his part, the representative of the Delegation of the Ministry of Education, João Paulo Silva, stated that the meeting aims to identify the decline in Brava and that the school delegation has an important role in this process because it is this delegation that manages the operation pedagogical aspects of schools.

“It is in schools that students begin to practice sport and, therefore, it is extremely important to create a nucleus to promote sport on the island”, he stated.

Eurico Barros, Physical Education teacher, said that the island has potential and there are people of good will who “certainly” can boost sport in Brava.

“To this end, we are collecting some materials that we do not have in the municipality or in schools because we need to start practicing different types of sport in class”, he concluded.
