In an interview with Inforpress, Francisco Tavares assured that with the value of 18,500 contos all the problems caused by the floods from the last rains would be resolved and that everything would return to normal.

According to the mayor, the Figueira Grande and Fajã d'Água national road is the responsibility of Estradas de Cabo Verde (ECV), highlighting that the institution is preparing its own budget.

“Yes, we did have a lot of damage here on the island, but nothing very unusual or serious. It should be noted that there were no injuries or loss of life, but rather some damage that we can classify as damage with the need to replace road walls and walls that ended up giving way, putting some houses at risk”, he argued.

With regard to road walls, he reported that they had identified eighteen cases, a little in each location on Brava Island, resulting in a loss of around fifteen thousand “preliminary” contos. However, he added that there are situations where it is necessary to build walls that have been demolished, to protect houses that are located close to rivers.

“Some fishermen were also affected, where we can highlight the most famous cases which were the damage to four boats in the town of Fajã d'Água, totaling a budgeted loss of around 120 to 150 thousand escudos for the repair of all”, he assured, Furthermore, subsidies have already been made available so that affected fishermen can resume their economic activities.

Francisco Tavares also added that there is another case in the Ponta Baixo area, a source of family income, in this case a bakery that was affected by the water flooding.

In this situation, the same source states that the losses could reach 300 thousand escudos, but that, however, they have not yet been fully recovered, this is because a machine is in a workshop to see if it can be repaired or not.

Regarding road cleaning, the mayor said that cleaning has already been carried out on the main roads, namely Pé da Rocha, Rua da Cultura, paths that give access to the town of Lém and also to Furna.

“The council had to hire non-specialized, but temporary, labor for cleaning, and the work is already in the final phase, but there is still a need to rent heavy machinery to load and transport the rubble off the road”, he stated.

The mayor guaranteed that all the roads that were closed immediately after the floods are now open and also informed that the cleaning is estimated at around 2200 contos.
