The physical implementation of the seawater desalination project to supply the island of Brava, fully funded by Luxembourg Cooperation, begins in the first week of April and has an execution period of 11 months.
The information was provided to Inforpress by the director/delegate of the Intermunicipal Water Company, Águabrava, Rui Évora, for whom the implementation of the project will allow the resolution of the problem of water supply to the island of Brava.
Águabrava, as the owner of the works for this project, advanced its director/delegate that the work contract has already been signed with a French consortium and the conditions are being created for the physical execution of the work to start in the first week of April , and it is estimated that in the first half of 2024 the system will be completed and operational.
The main works of this project, according to Rui Évora, consist of the installation of a plant with a desalination capacity of 1,100 cubic meters of water per day, but as the forecast is for the unit to operate during the solar period, it will have a production capacity of 310 cubic meters during the solar period and if there is a need to cover the island's demand, it will be able to work four more hours beyond the solar period since it is connected to the public energy network.
In addition, the project also includes the construction of solar parks with an installed capacity of 500 KWA, the construction of two wells to capture sea water, the construction of reservoirs and the entire system for the adoption of water, including pumping stations and pipelines, and represents an investment of around 520 million escudos.
At the same time as the execution of this project, Rui Évora said that in the framework of Águabrava's investment plan for 2023, the water adoption network will be executed from the head of Avenida in Nova Sintra to the Risco Vermelho reservoir in order to allow that, once it is concluded, the project, the conditions are created for the entire island of Brava to be supplied with desalinated water, especially for urban consumption.
“The intention, in the short term, will be to make desalinated water available for human consumption and to use the water that is currently used for human consumption, exclusively for agriculture”, concluded Rui Évora.
