The current mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, has not yet taken a final decision on his candidacy for the next term. With elections a year and a half away, he considers it too early to make a decision.
In recent days, rumors have been swirling about the president's intentions. Some supporters say he is leaning towards running again for the post, citing his deeds and accomplishments during his current tenure as reasons for his possible candidacy. They highlight achievements such as improvements to the island's infrastructure, advances in education, housing, water and sanitation, and successful initiatives to stimulate the local economy.
On the other hand, there are also those who speculate that the mayor is considering not running again. These individuals argue that the president may be looking for new challenges.
In conversation with Bravanews, Francisco Tavares, President, said that if today it were for his final decision, he would answer yes. Yes would be available to run for the new mandate, but “however, there is still a long way to go before the next elections and there is still a lot to try to do within this mandate and many things can happen that could turn this YES into NO” claims the mayor.
The situation has generated intense discussions on social media and in the island's daily life, with some defending the continuity of the president and others claiming that it is time for a change in leadership. These divergences reflect the importance of the position and the community's expectations regarding the next term.
So far, the President is not sure if he will or will not go to the new term, exactly according to him, it is still too early for this decision. However, it is expected that by the end of the year he will officially pronounce, clarifying his position and putting an end to speculation surrounding his candidacy for the next term.
While the political community anxiously awaits this definition, the local electoral scenario is likewise still waiting for a position on the part of the PAICV (Partido Africana da Independência de Cabo Verde) which should also, by the end of the year, have a definition on who will lead to the next municipal elections. Remembering that after losing the municipal elections in 2012, the tambarina party will be 12 years away from power in Brava.
