Brava: Socio-economic diagnosis of Lomba Tantum presents perspectives for analyzes and improvements – focal point of the Platforms program

The focal point of the Platforms on Brava programme, Danilson Andrade, considered Tuesday that the socio-economic diagnosis of the locality of Lomba Tantum presents detailed perspectives of analysis and improvements in the locality.

These considerations were made to Inforpress, at the end of the presentation of the document in Nova Sintra, which portrays Lomba Tantum as a community located 15.4 kilometers from Nova Sintra, with 58 houses and 206 inhabitants.

Still according to the data, the majority of the population is male, concentrated mostly in the range of 0 to 14 years, with an average age of 25 years.

With regard to education, the data showed that there is a high rate of school dropouts, qualifications are “very low” and that the unemployment rate is more pronounced among women.

As the main source of income, respondents indicated fishing, with livestock and agriculture as an alternative.

With regard to Social Security, in the universe of these 206 people, only one declared that he was enrolled in the system.

Incidentally, the document highlights that the income declared by families focuses mainly on 10 thousand escudos, having declared in the survey that they do not save, except for some who “play totocaixa” and two people who resorted to commercial banks.

In view of these data, the focal point of the Plataformas program stressed that this document gives them detailed perspectives on Lomba Tantum, “demonstrating where they are advanced, where they need to improve, where there is nothing and where they need to build from scratch”.

He emphasized that in the area where there are interventions, such as fishing, the data demonstrate the possibilities that the community has, possibilities that, as he reinforced, need to be taken advantage of.

In this regard, he assured that the “Brava Fish” project, which is the impact project, will give new impetus to this form of livelihood and development, to boost the area.

They are now in the process of completing the future headquarters of the fishing cooperative, which has already been legally recognized and published in the Official Bulletin, and it will begin to operate.

The members took office at the end of Tuesday afternoon, and from now on, highlighted the person in charge, they will start with a business plan with other stores, fish distribution, study how it will be commercialized, the transformation of the fish, among other aspects that affect this cooperative.

However, during the presentation, the target audience contested the implementation of the project in the locality of Lomba Tantum, claiming that the island itself is losing population day after day, and this locality is far away. The question is whether it will not be invested in this area and then remain “in vain”.

Danilson Andrade recognized this fact, but added that, curiously, it is in this location that the population has been growing.

But he also defended that there will be no growth if it is only in terms of population numbers and there is no growth in other areas.

"The demographic increase must accompany investments in the area of health, education, sectors where we have seen that there is a school dropout rate, which is a scourge, and community shortages that have to be tackled", said the same source.

He also added that the “Brava Fish” project will provide the locality of Lomba Tantum with other “opportunities that allow the local population to have income, to settle there, not to feel the need to leave because it is a place that has a future”.
