Brava/Retrospective: PAICV victory in local elections marks the year 2024 on the island
Brava Island was marked by the victory of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) in the local elections of December 1st, as the Movement for Democracy (MpD) has been in local power for the last 12 years.
PAICV candidate Amândio Brito obtained 1,368 votes, against 1,307 for Francisco Tavares, candidate for the MpD, but lost in the race for the Municipal Assembly as the MpD secured victory with 1,364 votes, surpassing the 1,298 achieved by the PAICV.
In the health area, with the emergence of dengue fever, some cases were recorded in the municipality, which left the entire island on alert and, to date, the Health Department is working on prevention and awareness, to eliminate this disease.
Meanwhile, during the cooperation, the municipality also received exchange visits from doctors from different countries.
The Social area was also marked by cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), aggression and cases of sexual violation of children, with some awareness-raising activities carried out by various entities and forces in society in order to combat and minimize these situations, but also on parental responsibility.
In the environmental area, the island stood out with projects carried out by the Biflores association, in terms of raising awareness of environmental preservation, endemic plants, among other species, some projects developed with fishing communities, deworming and animal castration campaigns carried out by the Bons Amigos Association, and the involvement of schools in environmental awareness campaigns.
In the cultural area, the island stood out for holding June festivals and performances by the Orfeões da Brava group in several communities, and several activities linked to the Sete Sóis Sete Luas Festival were also held, as well as the first sports gala on the island.
In the Sports sector, several interventions were carried out on the island, holding events in various modalities, among others.
