The commander of the Brava police station today appealed to fishermen on the island and in the country to be "more prudent" and comply with the guidelines of the Maritime Port Institute (IMP) on the state of the sea.

Higor Almeida made this appeal in statements to Inforpress, at the end of a rescue operation of a fishing vessel named "Frescura de Baía", which suffered a technical malfunction this morning, off the coast of Ilhéus Rombos.

According to this leader, the vessel assigned to the Maritime Police left the pier in Furna at around 08:45, with three members of the island's police force, to help the fishing vessel in the city of Praia.

He also added that the vessel had 16 fishermen on board and that it left on Monday afternoon from the pier at Porto Vale dos Cavaleiros, Fogo, to fish in the areas of the islets.

The vessel was towed and the fishermen rescued, an operation that, according to the captain, took place “normally”.

In view of the disappearances that the island has had since the beginning of 2019, last week there was another case in which the body has not yet been found and the commander took the opportunity to call for “greater prudence” on the part of the fishermen.

The same source says he is aware that fishing is the livelihood of fishermen, but added that "it is always good to respect and follow the IMP's guidelines on the state of the sea, in order to avoid accidents that can cause more damage" .

He took the opportunity to inform that the Christmas/New Year's plan in safety, of the National Police (PN), is taking place "normally", having carried out the arrest of a young man who was driving without being qualified for the purpose and who has already been presented to the court for application of coercive measures.
