Residents of the locality of Lomba Tantum, in Brava, say they are aware that it is the parents who must change their attitudes towards education and limits to their children in order to have a better community.

This acknowledgment was made today, during a door-to-door awareness-raising action carried out by a technician from the Cabo Verdean Institute for Children and Adolescents (ICCA), an activity organized to mark the World Day Against Child Labour, celebrated today, 12 of June.

Upon being approached, residents began to vent about the different situations they live in the area, even though they are aware that most of the time it is they, the parents, who allow such events.

Speaking to Inforpress, Reinaldo Meireles, a resident of the locality, said that there are no cases of child labor in the area, although in the past it was a frequent practice as many parents put their children selling fish, thus not studying.

But today, it has become clear that the problem is different, the issue of the lack of limits in children and that many do not want to attend school and many parents do not oblige them, but also the lack of schedules to be at home, especially at night.

“We came across children wandering the streets late at night, others outside bars, among people smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages”, he said, stressing that often the parents are at home, but the children are at home. street to do as they please and without any supervision.

And in this sense, he congratulated the technician for the door-to-door awareness action, asking her to do this more often because the area needs it, taking into account that many teenagers and young people are taking the path of social ills.

Along the same lines, Janaína Rodrigues, another resident, was very clear in recognizing that “the situation in this community is critical”, but that the main culprits are the parents themselves, who have the notion that what their children do is wrong , but don't set limits or set rules.

According to the same source, children are not supervised and have no limits, which is why they start to deviate even when they are teenagers, which is reflected in the community and in daily behavior, recognizing that the area is not bad, but it is the people themselves. residents who are transforming it in this way.

In turn, the ICCA psychologist on the island, Mileida Cabral, explained that this action, which served to learn more about the situation of children in the community, aimed to raise awareness and inform people of the negative impacts that child labor has on life. of children and adolescents.

According to the technique, people should become aware that children's place is at school and that they have to live their childhood with leisure, games, which is good for their development.

He highlighted that people often confuse that the ICCA prevents children from helping with homework, but he defended that this is not the case.

As he explained, “children have to help with household chores even to instill in them the issue of responsibility from an early age, but any work that requires some physical and mental effort and that puts children's physical, mental, social and moral health at risk is considered harmful to their health and beyond”.

In this sense, Mileida Cabral asks parents and society in general to let children be children, to take advantage of the phase to dream, to play, to have leisure, justifying that work with effort that harms, is not for children.

It also asks society to denounce any case that puts children in danger and at risk, because if there are no denunciations, the ICCA is not aware of it and has no way of intervening.

Regarding the issues raised by the residents and parents, he stressed that it is something he has always been doing, but what he will do is raise awareness, reinforce conversations and lectures related to these issues in the communities, but that parents have to be aware of become aware of their responsibilities.

Well, he stressed that it is not necessary for the ICCA or police authorities to be policing for children who remain on the street until late hours or in inappropriate places, as parents should know that the place of children at certain times is at home and there are places that are strictly forbidden to attend.

On the issue of child labor, he informed that Brava receives few complaints and these are made during the rainy season and at the time of sowing.

The World Day Against Child Labor is celebrated annually on June 12 under the aegis of the International Labor Organization, since 2002, when the first global report on child labor was presented.

This day seeks to raise awareness of issues related to child labor, as well as to develop actions and efforts to eliminate it.
