Brava: Cooperative of Shipowners, Fishermen and Fishmongers intends to transform Lomba Tantum into a tourist spot on the island

The Cooperative of Shipowners, Fishermen and Fishmongers (CoopUnipesca) of Lomba Tantum intends to work to transform the community, with a view to valuing seafood products in this area and transforming it into a tourist spot.

Speaking to Inforpress, the director of this cooperative, Anildo Lobo, after the members took office, explained that the strategy will be based on valuing sea products, captured in an artisanal and sustainable way, based on the principle that structures in land to value the products of the sea.

In addition, he reinforced that they will support the community in some branches that do not yet exist or that are in deficit and try to concentrate the vision of tourists in this community.

This leader highlighted that CoopUnipesca will make a difference in two key points, in the way fish is caught, using the artisanal fishing method, and through fair trade.

According to the official, fishermen often catch a large amount of fish, but are unable to leave the island, as it is underdeveloped and it is necessary to find solutions so that there is no damage.

Of these solutions, he pointed out the different ways of conserving and processing fish, not ruling out the “great possibility” of exporting the surplus to the islands of Fogo and Santiago.

According to Anildo Lobo, the “unity and centralization” of its catches allow it to position itself in the market, with a certain scale of security and in the defense of shipowners, fishermen and fishmongers, which would otherwise be “difficult to obtain”.

"This will eliminate intermediaries and therefore the marketing chain is shorter and, consequently, fairer, which also benefits the consumer", considered the association leader.

This cooperative was created within the scope of the pilot project of the Local Development plan, linked to the Sustainable Development Objectives (ODS), which will be implemented in the locality of Lomba-Tantum, Brava Fish.
The cooperative has already been made official and published in the Official Bulletin.

Its head office is already under construction and they will work to promote employment for young people in this locality.

At the moment, Anildo Lomba said that they already have 25 members, but that they are in the awareness phase, with a view to reaching a larger number of members.
