Brava: Agricultural work compromised due to the increase in the price of workers and seeds and the uncertainty if it will be worth it

Agricultural work in the agricultural areas of Ilha Brava is compromised due to the price that workers are charging, the price of seeds and the uncertainty whether such an investment will be worthwhile.

Inforpress found on the ground that some farmers are already preparing their land, mostly on their own, because of the price that workers are charging and the sale price of seeds, combined with the scarcity of rain in recent years, leaves a climate of uncertainty whether it is worth investing all this money or not.

In a round carried out today, it was verified that the farmers are cleaning the field and others have even opened the holes and are waiting for the rain to throw the seeds in the ground.

However, some peasants approached said that last year the rains fell early, but also the green did not last long, because the rain was very little, and this year, the hope is that it will fall in the middle of July, beginning August, with the intention that this year will be better, as in the past, although they are aware that things are changing year after year.

Henrique Senna Gonçalves, one of the island's farmers, who lives in Ponta Baixo, told Inforpress that he is full of hope and a lot of faith, but also confident in the hard work he is doing to prepare the land.

He says he is aware that the azagua this year is later than last year, but the hope is to have a good agricultural year, stressing that last year it rained early, but it was a rain that stopped early.

But, for a good year, Henrique Senna Gonçalves stressed that everyone needs to do their part because nature can change from one hour to another and it is something unpredictable.

For his part, he said that he has no problem with seeds because he has a good part that he reserved from the previous year, but the big problem they are facing is the lack of workers willing to work and the price they charge and the income is low.

And that is why, according to him, there are several plots of land that are abandoned on the island, as the price is high, the yield is low, the seeds for those who buy are not at an affordable price and the uncertainty whether all the resources mobilized for such investment will later pay off.

Ildo Rodrigues is another farmer from Brave, but he lives in the town of Braga, and in addition to the difficulties mentioned, those from Braga have another problem, which is the infestation of wild hen in the area, which, according to him, does not justify sow because it won't do any good.

According to this farmer, the area is a poor area, the workers are charging 2000 escudos each day of work, the seeds are being sold for 1000 escudos per liter, which is not worth it, as the wild hens will not let the seeds to be born and not even develop.

The island's farmers also revealed that the expectation "is great", augurring a "good agricultural year".
