Brava: Brava farmers consider the agricultural year “satisfactory”
Farmers from Brava stated today that the agricultural year in Brava presents a “satisfactory” result, although there are still pests of the fall armyworm and turtle.
On a tour of some locations on the island, the “viciousness” of the corn plantations is visible, although some farmers consider that if there is another rain, until the end of October, it would be of great “value”.
Farmer João Gomes, from the town of Cova Rodela, highlighted that he is happy with this agricultural year, as he has already eaten corn, pumpkin and beans and assured that there is still a lot to harvest on his land.
“This year in Brava, at least in my locality, we have nothing to complain about except for the lack of labor we had at the beginning of the agricultural year, but now we are harvesting a little bit of everything”, he declared.
As he explained, the fall armyworm plague began to damage the plants, but with the arrival of the last rains they decreased, however, according to him, the turtle plague began, however they are being fought.
Regarding pasture, he stressed that it is “guaranteed” but called on livestock farmers not to practice free grazing so that they can have “good” pasture in the future.
In the village of Nova Sintra, farmer Manuel Duarte considered that the agricultural year was “a little better than in recent years”.
“I have nothing to complain about because my production of corn and beans is guaranteed and so is the pumpkin harvest”, he stated.
In Campo Baixo, farmer Mário da Lomba also echoed the same opinion as the farmer from Nova Sintra regarding the agricultural year, considering that he did a great job at the beginning and will therefore reap good “fruits”.
But to do so, he explained that it was necessary to “pamper” the plantations, give them space on the land, weed them and apply medicine in time.
