Grupo Carnavalesco da Furna is the only official group for the Carnival 2023 parade, which kicked off today, literally “assaulting” some arteries of the town of Furna as a way of announcing its departure to the streets.

Speaking to Inforpress, Edivaldo Lopes, responsible for Grupo Carnavalesco da Furna explained that the group participated for the first time in 2020 and in the following two years did not have the opportunity to participate due to the covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions that followed.

However, this year, he announced that they will go out into the street, regardless of whether more groups will officially participate or not.

Asked about the theme they will bring to the streets of the island, he informed that they intend to portray a part of the history of the people of Brave, more specifically “whale fishing and emigration”.

To start the preparations, today the group carried out an "assault" through the streets of Furna, and this year it intends to bring about 200 revelers, taking the opportunity to invite other people from other areas to join the group, in order to brighten and live Carnival in the best possible way.

The other groups that normally participate officially in Carnival are the Baianas group and the Mocidade Brava Renascida.

On the part of the Baianas group, Fernanda Burgo, one of the responsible and founders of the group, announced that this year they will not participate in the official parade, regretting the situation, as it is a group that already has 25 years of existence and has always taken to the streets on the day Carnival, except for the previous two years, but an interruption caused by the pandemic.

Regarding non-participation this year, he explained that with the pandemic the group ended up dispersing and now it is necessary to reorganize itself to be able to carry out some activities and next year, it is committed to taking to the streets of Nova Sintra in a big way.

Likewise, Narciso Baptista, a member of the Mocidade Brava Renascida group, explained that at the moment the group is unstructured and no fundraising activity has been organized in order to allow better organization and have some funds to participate in the Carnival parade in 2023 .

Hence, he underlined that the stop during the previous two years imposed by covid-19 greatly damaged the dynamics of the group, recognizing that it is now necessary to work on the organization and union of the members in order to participate in next year’s parades.
