Brava: Minister guarantees that "it is a priority" for the Government to act to facilitate circulation in Fajã d'Água

The Minister of Internal Administration, Paulo Rocha, assured today that it is a priority for the Government to make efforts and remove earth and stones on the road connecting to Fajã d'Água in order to facilitate circulation.

The government official made these statements to the press during the ceremony alluding to St Vincent's Day, when asked by the media about the situation of the landslide that took place on Saturday afternoon, 21st, in Fajã d'Água, completely isolating the area.

“It is a rather large mass of land that ended up obstructing the road, and the population is in isolation, which means that it is a priority for the Government to concentrate all efforts to remove the earth and stones and facilitate the movement of people”, announced the minister, informing that the local authorities are already on the ground monitoring the situation.

Paulo Rocha considered that this landslide is “quite complicated”, as there was also a road obstruction, reinforcing that, however, “there are no victims to consider”.

He added that the National Civil Protection is already in contact with the Municipal Civil Protection service, the Roads Institute and with the Municipality of Brava itself, to take stock of the situation on the ground and thus follow the next steps.

As for the possibility of this landslide being the origin of an eruption, Paulo Rocha completely eliminated this hypothesis, stressing that Cape Verde is a country of volcanic origin, but that “it is important to say that it is mainly due to the quality of the land in that area that is always unstable that led to this episode, not facing a volcanic eruption at all”.

Finally, the minister stressed that Fajã d´Água is a very isolated area, where the other way to reach the area would be through the sea, but in this matter, he informed that only the technicians on the ground will be able to have a bigger and better vision in terms of of time and solution.

About this episode, the mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, made a publication on the Facebook page of the municipality after a visit to the site accompanied by the municipal focal point of Civil Protection, where he stressed that he found “how difficult” the descent is. and going up the rock to Fajã d´Água, informing that on Monday work will begin to create a less difficult access to the road.

The locality of Fajã d´Água was isolated at the end of the afternoon of last Saturday, 21st, after a landslide that, in addition to rock and earth, took a section of road with it.
