Francisco Tavares was speaking to journalists, on the sidelines of a meeting of the Municipal Civil Protection Council that took place, on Friday, in the main hall of the Brava City Council, with the presence of several representatives of local institutions.

According to the mayor, this meeting serves to bring together all the institutions that are part of the Municipal Civil Protection Council, with the purpose of passing on “credible” information about everything that has been happening in recent days, taking into account the earthquake that hit the island on Monday, October 30th.

As stated, the meeting had the “privilege” of being attended by the Risk director of the National Civil Protection Service, Geremias Cabral, and the coordinator of the Fogo and Brava region, who have been on the island since Tuesday to gather information.

“The meeting was the moment to bring together all the institutions that are part of the Municipal Civil Protection Council, to obtain information on what has been happening and also point out the paths that the council should follow in recent times, and thus increase the capacity to response with greater efficiency and effectiveness”, he informed.

Tavares emphasized that, next week, the municipal council will meet again, considering that it is necessary to reactivate the working groups, because the disorganization of the group has a lot to do with the great mobility of technicians from different institutions, which are part of the municipal civil protection “system”.

“The fact that we have fallen into the normality of actions, since in 2016 we had a crisis event in the town of Cova de Joana, however, we had a well-structured council. Now with the information we have, we will work to make the group work again, in case there is any eventuality”, he concluded.

In turn, the Risk Director of the National Civil Protection Service, Geremias Cabral, highlighted that the meeting aimed to take stock of the situation developed since the beginning of the “mission”, until now and show the places that can serve for a possible evacuation or other eventualities.

“We have already taken stock of the situation collected so far, so that all members of the council can understand what has already been dealt with and what remains to be seen, and thus be able to be in tune”, he highlighted, highlighting that it is “ It is extremely important to have a permanent meeting of the group.

He also intervened, informing that the Municipal Civil Protection Council always existed, but it was not working, but it brought together personalities from various institutions in Brava, with the capacity to make decisions and organizations to define priorities.

According to the same source, they reached a consensus that the group needs to meet more frequently, in order to be better prepared to respond to any type of crisis.

“Upon arriving on the island we had some constraints, taking into account that the council was not active, therefore, I call for the permanent functioning of the municipal council regardless of crises or not”, he concluded.
