On Thursday, 28, photographer Zé Pereira launched the book “The Introduced, Migratory and Endemic Birds of Cape Verde” in the Main Hall of the Brava Chamber, and inaugurated the photographic exhibition “Os Bravas” with photographs of Brava.
The book is the result of a collection of images and research that the author carried out for more than six years, in which he had the opportunity to photograph, in a universe of 200, 36 introduced, migratory and endemic species in all the islands of the archipelago.
According to the photographer, this is the first book to portray the habits and behavior of birds in Cape Verde and in the future intends to bring “new publications, with new species” that have not yet been photographed.
He said that he initially started doing this work “more for the love of photography and nature” and that he had no idea what to expect.
Well, realized Zé Pereira, the idea initially was to photograph all the birds that can be seen in Cape Verde and then a publication, but it was not possible, since just to photograph a species of eagle, he said, it took about four years.
However, he added that “the most important, the essential” of this book is the idea, the context and the main objective, which is the preservation of the environment and the conservation of species, which led him to publish a book with photographs, but with a scientific part.
He also underlined that the book has been “much in demand” by biologists and tour guides, since the work “provides”, in each chapter, “scientific and basic information”, including a map on which the species was photographed. giving special emphasis to the species Cagarra and Calhandra.
The presenter Rosa Andrade, a biologist, made an analysis more for her professional area and considered the work “excellent”, due to its “richness” of images of the birds portrayed, demonstrating a part of the biodiversity of the country’s fauna that is “very rich”.
For the biologist, the author managed to reconcile everything in one work, from the sea and land birds present in the country, talking about their ecologies and habitat and the islands where they can be found.
About the exposed paintings, the photographer considered that it was “extremely difficult”, on an island “so beautiful” and to summarize it in 20 paintings.
He demonstrated his desire to make an exhibition with more paintings, but as it was not possible, he emphasized that he sought to portray in these paintings the morality of the population of Brave.
The photographer emphasized that he made it a priority for his work to dedicate himself essentially to the islands that have had less visibility, that is, Brava, São Nicolau and Maio.
