The community of Lomba Tantum learned on Tuesday the results of a socio-economic diagnostic study carried out in the locality and was sensitized by the high rate of school dropouts detected in the document.

In this community, the population lives mainly from fishing and this fact was pointed out by some residents present at the presentation of the document as one of the factors that leads to school dropout.

The case of some parents who “force” their children to drop out of school, mainly from the age of 15, to support them in working or selling fish was also denounced.

Pedro Andrade, one of the residents and father in this locality, appreciated the document, making a positive analysis, insofar as this document, as he pointed out, will serve as a “support” for an “analysis of conscience” and of the situation in which they live , to remedy the “guilt” that the community “carries” for finding itself in the position described by the study.

Speaking to Inforpress, this resident explained that, often, in the community there is a mentality that children should be raised or educated in the same way that their parents were.

This reason leads many parents to argue that, after a certain point, their children “do not need” to attend school anymore, because they must support them in their daily work or in selling fish, as their parents did.

Showing his indignation, this resident added that, if parents were educating their children this way at the time, it was because there was no support.

Today, he recognized that today there are several supports, from the payment of tuition fees, transport, materials, including school equipment and that “whoever does not study or does not let their child study is because they want to”.

In this sense, he drew the attention of parents who practice this practice, warning them that at sea their children run the risk of losing their lives, remembering that the sea “has a tide” and you never know when it will rise, which can cost the lives of parents and children.

Domingo Lobo is another resident who congratulated the realization of the diagnosis of the locality, explaining that previously the area has already gone through “bad times” in several areas.

He added that currently, however, "great changes already exist", stressing that he is aware that the "first change must start by raising people's awareness, especially in the issue of children's education".

“We see that it is the parents themselves who cooperate with this situation. Because when a parent puts a young child in the sea just for failing a year, this is not a form of support or encouragement”, said this fisherman, condemning the attitude of many who still continue to harm their children with their daily work. .

According to this fisherman, he sets out to sea early in the morning and doesn't have time to return.

During the period of work, he continued, he faces many things, which encourages him to encourage his children to continue with their studies, so that the situation, he added, does not repeat itself from generation to generation.

“For me, it's already a punishment and that's why I don't want to see my son go through the same situation. I fight for them to be able to continue at school, in order to have a better future, even if they repeat a year, he will always have my encouragement”, said this father, promising that he will join other parents who defend the same cause to raise awareness. the other parents, showing them the “pride” it is to see their child “well in life”, but without “danger and sea tides”.
