Speaking to the media, nurse Patrícia Recheado stressed that it had been a very "exciting and rewarding" experience and exchange and praised the gesture of the visiting doctors who, she said, were "sparing no effort" to attend to more than 50 patients a day.

"This exchange needs to happen more often because the island really needs professionals and specialists to serve the population. We're seeing a considerable number of patients who want to go for consultations. It's a shame we don't have much space, but we're seeing around 50 to 60 people a day," he said.

However, the nurse said that at first the consultations were also planned to take place in Nossa Senhora do Monte but, due to the lack of conditions in the hospital structure in the community, the service will only take place in the town.

"Anyone who wants to go for a consultation and has already made an appointment can just go to the Health Police Station in Nova Sintra," he said.

The representative of the doctors' group, Júlia Barbosa, explained that they came to Cape Verde because they are groups of health professionals of Cape Verdean descent, from different specialties, who will be able to contribute to the country.

With the local professionals, the same source assured that there is a lot of sharing of experiences and exchange of ideas, which will be enriching for both parties.

For his part, patient António Paiva praised the doctors' visit to the island, pointing out that the municipality has a huge shortage of specialists, and that the solution is to travel to other islands for specialty consultations.

"I think this initiative should be repeated more often, because we have a lot of difficulties in Brava and there are people with few financial resources to travel and make appointments, and this action could help the population to at least make an appointment and find out about their state of health," he concluded.

The consultations, which are free of charge, began on Sunday, 06 and will run until next Wednesday, 09.
