Brava: Mayor of the City Council considers the “Os Centenários” exhibition to be a great act of appreciation
The Mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, today considered that the exhibition “The Centenaries of Cape Verde” is a “great act of appreciation” of the journey of Cape Verdeans in building the country.
Speaking to Inforpress, Francisco Tavares stressed that the photographic sample by Inforpress photojournalist JP Tavares, which will run until November 2nd, is a “gift”, because through the photographs “we get to know the centenarians” that exist in Cape Green.
“There is a barcode on the photographs, which with a cell phone we can connect to a link that takes us directly to the YouTube platform, where we can find out more about the stories of the centenarians”, he explained.
According to the same source, the exhibition is a “living library” that tells us the history of Cape Verde, over more than a hundred years, in which each figure lived in practice.
According to the mayor, the exhibition highlights three centuries-old figures from the island, two of whom are 103 years old and another is 112 years old, which is why, according to him, the chamber “embraced” this exhibition project in the municipality and also signed a protocol with the producer of this initiative.
“Whenever the chamber identifies a new centenarian of the island, it will notify the project to add to its estate”, he added.
In turn, photojournalist João Paulo Tavares highlighted that the “Cape Verde Centenaries” exhibition started on the 18th of this month, in the city of Praia, with the aim of recovering the memory of “our centenarians at national level”.
“I chose Brava Island because it is one of the municipalities that hosts a centenary, therefore, it is the second island to host this exhibition and also the municipal council of the municipality is the first to sign a protocol with this project”, he highlighted.
João Paulo also said that he was inspired by old stories told by his own grandmother, to draw on the knowledge of these honorees and share them with the new and future generations.
The photojournalist had to travel to Fogo, Brava, Maio, Santo Antão and São Vicente, as well as the island of Santiago, to visit, capture images and audio to give voice to the Centenarians portrayed in dozens of paintings.
