The president of the “Zé Luís Solidário” project, José Luís Martins, considered today that the education, health and housing sectors are the most vulnerable on the island of Brava, intending to make some donations to change the scenario.
This official made this consideration in an interview with Inforpress, after a meeting with the population of Brave, which served to present the project, where he made a "positive balance" of the project's actions on the island.
“At Brava, the impact is positive. In the three years, in the year 2022 alone, around 8000 dollars were sent to Brava, supporting the project's four areas of intervention, namely health, education, housing and food", listed the president, stressing that he receives many requests, but often what is missing is the way to help.
However, he assured that as of today, he expects Brava to receive much more support.
Asked about the problems that he most detected on the island during his visit, he pointed to problems in terms of education, explaining that he found that in most schools there is a lack of materials, of different types, but also the lack of reinforcement in the school canteen.
Another area that pointed to some weaknesses was health, reinforcing that everyone is aware that the Brava Health Department does not have all the necessary conditions or equipment, which is why people have to travel to Fogo Island or to Praia City.
In this case of health in particular, he recalled that people face some difficulties in purchasing tickets or even paying for their stay and treatment, but also some difficulties in supporting third parties, especially for bedridden patients.
The issue of social housing is also an area that, according to the same source, has shown to have several weaknesses, noting that it receives several requests for this sector, but that it is not able to help everyone at the same time, remembering that the project depends on support from other people .
With these findings, he informed that upon returning to the United States of America (USA) he would meet with the sponsors, highlighting the fact that the “biggest sponsor” was from the island of Brava, and together with other emigrants from the island he would try to achieve mainly school supplies.
At the moment, he informed that four volumes of hospital materials are about to arrive on Brava Island to overcome some difficulties in the Red Cross Day Centre, Health Department and even in home support.
For his part, Francisco Tavares, mayor of Brava, considered that the impact of the project on the lives of beneficiaries is “transformative for the positive”, exemplifying that there are people who managed to solve their health problems if it were not for the support of the project would not be possible and their lives would be more and more difficult.
He also indicated that there are others that are benefiting in terms of housing rehabilitation and even the city council has already received orders that came from the USA with materials that served the population of Brava, namely school and hospital materials, among others.
Finally, he highlighted that this is “a project that everyone should cherish for demonstrating seriousness in the implementation of all support”, adding that the municipality has been a partner until now and will continue to be so.
Associação José Luís Solidário is a social solidarity organization created and based in the United States of America, with the aim of supporting vulnerable families in the areas of health, housing, food assistance and education.
