Brava: Psychologist urges teachers to seek help from experts in case of professional burnout
The teacher and psychologist at Escola Secundária Eugénio Tavares, Rubem Gomes, today advised the teaching class to seek help from specialists in case of “professional burnout”, as it could be a case of burnout syndrome.
Rubem Gomes, who spoke to Inforpress, highlighted that the disease does not only affect the teaching class, but also professionals in other areas, including police, firefighters, drivers and public transport, among others.
“Burnout syndrome, also known as professional exhaustion syndrome, is a mental illness that appears after an individual goes through stressful work situations, that is, those that require a lot of responsibility or even excessive competitiveness,” he explained.
According to the same source, the disease has physiological, behavioral and emotional symptoms, and explained that the physiological occurs when there are stomach pains and migraines, the emotional when a person feels sad, with mood changes and insomnia, among others.
“The behavioral symptoms, on the other hand, begin with irritability and lack of professionalism, among others”, he added.
In this sense, he explained that burnout syndrome can be prevented if the person realizes that they are feeling tired when working excessive hours, in this case, according to him, the solution is to reduce their workload or duties, but also to go on vacation. and thus avoid burnout.
“If a person or professional is experiencing the aforementioned symptoms, it is advisable to seek help from a psychologist, as the disease is treatable and the sooner it is diagnosed and treated, the greater the chance of cure, as otherwise it can lead to worsening and the consequences could be irreversible”, concluded psychologist Rubem Gomes.
