Brava: Rainfall brings new impetus to farmers and society in general
The rain of these last few days in Brava has given a new lease of life to farmers, who have reinforced their sowing, and to livestock breeders, who are closer to guaranteeing pasture to sustain their animals.
The rain on the 1st of August, according to some farmers, "wet the ground", which will be beneficial for those who chose to sow when it was still dry and for those who were waiting for a good rain to sow in very wet soil and, thus, try to dribble the guinea fowl pest.
António de Pina is a renowned farmer on Brava who cultivates land in Vila de Nova Sintra and in various locations on the island, but who, this year, in many of the lands, chose to sow dry, but in some that were being infested by the wild hen pest, he is only now going to start this sowing, confident that with the wet and heavy soil the grains will survive this plague.
With the rain that fell, even for a few hours, but “well used”, because, as he underlined, it was a “gentle rain and without wind”, causing the land to take advantage of most of the water.
Meanwhile, he regretted the fact that labor was "very expensive", but always maintaining the hope that the year will be of good production, thus freeing many people from shopping in stores, at least corn, beans and other agricultural products for some time.
In the locality of Cachaço, Benvinda Pinto said that the rain also reached the locality, where many had already sown dry even with the pest of the wild hen, which every day dawns on the land and the owners normally keep watch at dawn and in the evening to chase away this pest and try to escape a corn hole.
With the fall of rain it is believed that the grains that were sown still dry will be born and those who chose to sow only now will see their plants be born too.
Carlos Bango is also a farmer who, in order to “feint” the wild hen plague, only today started sowing in some land in Mato, as he considered that the land was now “very wet and heavy”, making it difficult to thus the plague to remove the earth and take away the grain.
With this rain, many people from Brave showed their satisfaction, emphasizing that soon the island will be green again and the cabbage and spinach plantations, among others, which produce in a short period of time, will already be ready to be harvested and consumed, but also “a certain guarantee” for the grazing of the animals.
For those who sowed before, the days are already counting down to the first weeding and those who are only now sowing the wish is that in a few days more rain will fall to do the weeding and wait for nature to guarantee the agricultural year and also pasture for the animals.
