The 2019/20 football season on the island of Brava begins this Sunday, 08, with the dispute of the Supercup of Brava, confirmed today the president of the Regional Football Association of Brava (ARFB), Samuel Varela.

In an interview with Inforpress, this official said that the game between Sporting and Nô Pintcha scheduled for Sunday, will start the season, and next weekend, the matches for the opening of the regional championship will be played.

According to him, at the end of this Friday afternoon, the draws were already carried out, where each team got to know its opponent a week before, so that everything goes as normal.

For Samuel Varela, expectations “are high” as always, even if this year there are two less teams in the dispute for the island's regional championship.

Normally, he said, it has been a championship with seven official teams, but this year only five will participate, which is already a “reason for concern”.

In the previous year, Juventude did not participate, this year the same thing happened with Benfica, considered by the president a “historic” team in football on the island, which promised to organize itself to participate in the best way in the next sporting season.

Despite these mishaps, the president of the ARFB says he believes that everything is in place so that this season can take place in the greatest tranquility and with fair play.

Asked about the reasons for the non-participation of the clubs in the championship, the same source said that the “investment model in the clubs is a wrong model”.

Because, he explained, the teams that have fewer possessions end up disappearing and he added that it is not surprising if next year, one or another team that is participating this year stops participating.

With that, he said that in his opinion, “football on Brava is in need of deeper reflection because there is something that is making the teams become poorer and poorer”.

This official added that he has been talking about this reflection for three years now and it is just a matter of creating a regulation for the registration of people, although he is fully aware that he will mess with the statute of the association itself.

And, he reinforced that this is no longer just his vision or that of the association's management, but that even the clubs have been insisting on it.

The same source took the opportunity to take stock of last season, considering that it was the season that worked the most, taking into account that they carried out all the tests in good time, they managed to put the sub 17 to compete at national level with a “great” provision, prepared the sub 20 that, according to him, for financial reasons the federation did not carry out.

For this year, she says she is aware that the challenges are greater, as they want to introduce the women's championship and a veterans' championship, from a financial point of view they don't have funds, but they also don't have debts.

For the players, managers and supporters, he asks them to go to the pitch in a spirit of peace, as he added that he has noticed that there are many “feuds” on the island and they are always taken to football.

“Football is a place of conviviality, of peace, where people watch, play matches in the best way and the best team wins”, asked the manager.

Another issue he pointed out that has been much addressed is the sale of alcohol on the football field. But, according to him, if it is a law that has already been approved, the association will comply. Even because, he pointed out, they always had the notion that alcohol and sport never go together.
