The population of the town of Cachaço asked
to the “competent entities” for taking measures, in the face of the bad agricultural year, “in time and time”, before their offspring begin to die due to lack of pasture and the appearance of diseases.

The appeal was made to the press, during the visit of the President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, to this location, where he came across a dry location, although the scenario is not different from the other locations he visited.

Antero Pereira, a resident of Cachaço, is a shepherd and a miner, but he stressed that the situation is getting more complicated every day, because “there is no pasture”.

“I am enjoying some pasture on a land that was given to me to work, as the year was not good, I am harvesting the straw to see if I can handle the animals”, said the shepherd, adding that he is afraid to see his animals. be hit by lack of pasture and pests.

In addition, he said that it is not only the lack of pasture that worries the population, but also the attacks that the cattle have suffered from packs of dogs that roam the community.

Other than that, he lamented the fact that other families in the locality are unemployed, that they have no other sources of income, depending on remittances from family members and support from third parties.

Faced with the situation, on behalf of other shepherds and farmers, he asked for the intervention of “competent government entities”, to minimize the effects of the third bad agricultural year.

“I don't think we should wait for our cattle to start dying or becoming malnourished, but rather, that support should be provided at the right time, because when the body is no longer able to withstand it, it's not worth it”, he stressed. this shepherd

According to him, if the support arrives “on time”, they will endure little by little, with some diligence and with faith that in the coming year the situation will be better and different from these three droughts.

Another resident, Ana Lopes, lives from homemade cheese production and said that day after day the situation is “increasingly difficult” because, she added, she does not have animals and the milk is provided by third parties, but that is gradually decreasing.

“If I buy seven or eight liters for 80 escudos/litre, I make 12 or 13 cheeses, which I sell for 100 escudos each and it is from this earnings that I earn the livelihood of the family, with some remittances that I receive from my son in the United States of America” , commented the resident.

He emphasized that some work fronts were opened, but that “unfortunately it was not benefited”.

When the President of the Republic was confronted with these concerns, he stressed that it was an aspect that had to be seen, since the agricultural year was bad and in agricultural areas like Cachaço people are dependent on agriculture, cattle raising and domestic cheese production, a situation that, according to the same, is also visible in other locations.

Therefore, he stressed that the drought mitigation program must be carried out “in good time”, so that what the populations need arrives “in due, adequate and opportune time”, and not at a “less precise moment”.

But, he added that in a conversation with the mayor, Francisco Tavares, he said that he is in articulation with the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, which he hopes will be fruitful, and that the aid will arrive on time, once that this year's assessment by the mayor presents a situation "a little worse" than in the previous two years.
