Brazil - Cape Verde

Brazil and Cape Verde are about to formalize an agreement to develop municipal housing plans, with the support of UN Habitat, official sources announced today, in Praia.

Mariana Falcão Dias, cooperation project analyst at the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), highlighted the importance of connecting technical assistance and social housing programs to Cape Verdean municipal councils, allowing them to develop and implement their own initiatives in the sector.

During a mission to Cape Verde this week, a Brazilian team assessed the needs, challenges and good practices in housing and spatial planning. According to Mariana Falcão Dias, Brazil considers Cape Verde a priority country due to shared challenges, despite their different dimensions.

In addition to managing condominiums and urbanization, the Brazilian government intends to support Cape Verde in supervising construction, aiming to reduce the country's quantitative and qualitative housing deficit.

Eneida Morais, general director of Cape Verdean Housing, highlighted the need to train municipal councils to promote the use of quality materials in the construction of houses, aiming to avoid structural problems in the future.

The next stage involves the elaboration of a model cooperation protocol, which will be reviewed and signed by the governments of Brazil and Cape Verde later this year.
