The truck responsible for selective waste collection recently broke down, and, to make matters worse, the spare part needed to repair it is missing on the island, in the country and even outside of Cape Verde. This failure has severely compromised the garbage collection capacity, resulting in unwanted accumulations in several areas of Brava Island.

As a consequence, workers responsible for waste collection find themselves in a delicate situation, facing the impossibility of carrying out their tasks effectively, as collection has been carried out in a small open-top truck. The accumulation of rubbish not only affects the aesthetics and cleanliness of the island, but also poses a significant risk to public health and the environment.

Local authorities are working hard to resolve the situation, seeking viable alternatives to ensure continued garbage collection until the truck is properly repaired. President Francisco Tavares said that it has been difficult to find pieces, including on the international market.

Meanwhile, it appeals for the population's understanding and requests collaboration to minimize waste and properly store it.

Efforts are being directed towards importing the necessary replacement part, aiming to reestablish the waste collection service as quickly as possible, mitigating the risks to public health and the environment on Brava Island.

Technicians contacted by Bravanews say that breakdowns happen, but they do not understand that a 2019 vehicle is purchased and the issue of spare parts is not foreseen. “How to buy a car whose parts are not even available on international markets”.

It is hoped that, with the resolution of this technical issue, garbage collection will return to normal, guaranteeing the hygiene and health of the local community.
