“Câmara de São Filipe has no interest in chairing the Association of the Municipalities of Fogo and Brava” – Nuías Silva

The acting president of the Association of the Municipalities of Fogo and Brava, in a press conference, said that as the mandate has already expired, he cannot leave a vacancy in the association without the election of a new president, according to the statute.

“It is pure untruth and demonstrates that Filipe Santos is not in the know and acts as a puppet of other entities that pass him wrong information without him having the sense to be able to confirm this information”, declared Nuías Silva, noting that the association was created in 1999 and since then there has been no effective revision of the statutes.

According to him, there was an attempt in 2019, but the process was not completed because the decision of the Intermunicipal Assembly must be preceded by the ratification of the municipal assemblies of the associates, adding that the change was made to allow the effective entry of the municipality of Santa Catarina as member in its own right and be able to enjoy its rights on an equal footing with other municipalities.

“The president of the association is not appointed on a rotating basis, but elected and we have already tried three times to meet to choose the president”, said Nuías Silva

“I am willing to hand over the association tomorrow as long as there is an election. We have tried and no consensus has been reached. It is necessary to convince people and not justify that it is my turn because the statute does not attribute a turn, but an election”, said the mayor of São Filipe, adding that in other matters such as the creation of the ADR, regional project of controlled landfill, chambers of cure for the cheese production units the council met and deliberated.

“If since 1999 Brava has never held the presidency of the board, how can it be rotated”, asks Nuías Silva, adding that this means that the president has been elected.

Nuías Silva recalled that the council of São Filipe has been in the presidency of the association since 2015 and questions why the election was not held during the four years in which the council of São Filipe was led by the MpD, if it is rotating.

“They cannot want to impose Brava, it could be Brava, Santa Catarina or Mosteiros, it cannot be São Filipe”, advocated Nuías Silva, noting that São Filipe supports the candidacy of Mosteiros, not because it is of the same political color, but because it recognizes that fact has a vision to give continuity to all the work and its dimension and weight in the structure, and Santa Catarina supports Brava's candidacy and there is this impasse.

The same source defended the need for dialogue, recalling that one does not become president of the association just because one wants to and if Brava has not held the presidency since 1999, it should reflect on the reasons and not criticize the mayor of São Filipe who is only two years old and seven months ahead of the association.

The meeting of the board of directors is called for between the 23rd and 25th of July for the election of the president and Nuías Silva appeals for consensus so that a president can be chosen because, he explained, there is a availability of Mosteiros, supported by São Filipe, and another da Brava supported by Santa Catarina, surprising the position of the two municipalities with less weight in threatening to leave the association.

The acting president of the association was surprised by the change in attitude of the mayor of Santa Catarina do Fogo, Alberto Nunes, who, after testifying and signing the addendum to the protocol as a member of the board of directors of the association itself, within a period of 24 hours marked of the act, which he considered illegitimate.

“How can you give the said for not said in 24 hours”, questioned Nuías Silva, stressing that the demarcation is only understood within a political-party framework because, he explained, the São Filipe council is working for a common good and that can be positively attended by people and want to discredit this work.
