In an interview with Inforpress, Carlos Silva said that they received the “unofficial” document that informs the mass deportation of 314 Cape Verdeans and that, he even highlighted, a man from the island of Fogo, who is on the list, has already been detained by the authorities.

According to this official, since the inauguration of the current President, Donald Trump, the police have been in plain clothes in the main cities, which has worried the local community.

Carlos Silva acknowledged that a significant number of Cape Verdean citizens “do not have documents”, highlighting that this measure announced by the Government will impact the entire socio-economic system of the community.

Donald Trump, he recalled, had already initiated deportations and eliminated essential services during his first term in 2017.

He added that although the association has brought a message of comfort to people, many Cape Verdeans are showing signs of despair and are constantly seeking the organization in order to find a short-term solution.

Carlos Silva said that the association intends, at this moment, to reflect and look for the best way to minimize the situation, also seeking to establish contact with the consular service and create an alternative system for families.

The new US President, Donald Trump, who took office on January 20, has given immigration agents the power to also “rapidly deport” immigrants who benefited from the previous government’s asylum programs.

According to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, on Thursday, the 23rd, a total of 538 foreigners were arrested and 373 were placed under detention in the first actions after Trump's decree.

The Republican has set a goal of accelerating deportations to one million per year, which is considered double the maximum number of deportations carried out in a single year in recent decades, according to data from the United States Department of Homeland Security.
