Section of the road in cobblestone continues to generate outrage among drivers, residents and users of the parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte

Nossa Senhora do Monte, August 4, 2024 — The decision taken by the authorities to pave the road between the city of Nova Sintra and Nossa Senhora do Monte with paving stones, instead of asphalt, generated and continues to generate a wave of discontent among residents of the locality. The choice, which was made with the approval of Brava City Council and national authorities, was received with surprise and frustration by the local population.

Residents argued that, while other areas of the archipelago opt for asphalt, known for its durability and comfort, the choice of paving seems to disregard the practical needs of the region. The justification presented by authorities — an emphasis on environmental and conservation issues — has not convinced many citizens, who note that asphalt roads continue to be built on other islands with similar environmental concerns.

Pavement, although traditional and aesthetically valued in some contexts, is seen by many as less suitable to withstand intense traffic and local climatic conditions. "It's a decision that doesn't make sense to us. If the objective was to meet environmental issues, why do other islands continue to use asphalt?", asks Joaquim Gomes, a local resident.
