Cheese production and fruit processing unit in Campo Baixo is closed, leaving the community adrift

The unit, which had been contributing to the region's economy and generating direct and indirect jobs, has remained closed for more than five years, leaving many workers unemployed and the community very devastated.

The unit previously managed by the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture, then by the Campo Baixo Community Association, was closed, according to those responsible for the Association, due to financial challenges faced in recent years. “Production costs have increased, becoming unsustainable. The closure of the unit not only impacted workers, but also had negative consequences for local farmers who provided raw materials for the production of cheese and sweets.

This unit, which cost more than twenty thousand contos, an investment made by the Ministry of Agriculture, is now another “white elephant” in the group of buildings built in Brava and which has no practical use at the moment.

At this time of difficulty, the Campo Baixo community is looking for ways to get back on its feet, preserving its traditions and identity while facing the challenges of unemployment and economic uncertainty that arose with the closure of the Cheese Production and Fruit-to-Sweet Processing Unit.
