The Council of the Republic today highlighted the need for coordination between sovereign bodies regarding Cape Verde's positions in the international arena so that the country always speaks with one voice.

This is one of the highlights of the Council meeting, held today, in the city of Praia, under the presidency of the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, the results of which were presented in a press release.

The meeting's agenda included an analysis of geostrategic wars and armed conflicts in Africa and the world and their impact on Cape Verde and the commemoration of national dates and important events in the Republic.

According to the document, the advisors discussed the various geostrategic wars that have dominated international life, with particular emphasis on the one taking place in Ukraine and the one taking place in the Middle East.

“It was a debate with a broad base of information and elements of assessment, namely on the direct and indirect effects on the international community as a whole, starting with the effects on the economic and financial level, and also on the real risks of escalation more globalized”, reads the document distributed to the press.

According to the same source, the various armed conflicts in Africa also deserved the Council's attention, from those occurring in the West African region with the so-called third generation military uprisings to relatively more distant situations such as that in Sudan, the Central African Republic , the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia.

“Particular attention was paid to recent military interventions to alter the constitutional order, the context in which they have occurred, their format and the support they have found among the populations”, he says.

Regarding the effects on Cape Verde, the statement said that several scenarios were considered, all placing emphasis on defending national interests and safeguarding the situation of emigrant communities spread across the world.

“The need to be prepared and to study and project the lines of evolution was emphasized. Regarding taking positions in the international arena, the Council of the Republic highlighted the need for articulation, as a process of building understandings, between the sovereign bodies, so that Cape Verde always speaks with one voice”, he added.

Regarding the second point on the agenda regarding the celebration of national dates and important events of the Republic, the counselors expressed the need to celebrate Amílcar Cabral's centenary in a dignified manner, as a figure of the Nation and above any cleavages.

Likewise, the statement said that the need to install, as soon as possible, an organizational mechanism that would allow the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, in 2025, to be prepared in the best possible way.

The importance of celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Release of Political Prisoners of Tarrafal, on May 1st next year, was also highlighted.

The Council of the Republic is the consultative body of the President of the Republic and includes the president of the National Assembly, the prime minister, the president of the Constitutional Court, the Ombudsman, the president of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, the former presidents of the Republic, in addition to the five citizens designated by the President of the Republic.

According to the same source, all members of the Council of the Republic participated in this Monday's work, as well as the guests, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, Rui Figueiredo, and ambassadors José Luís Monteiro and Jorge Tolentino.
