Covid-19/Brava: Parents and guardians confident in a “quiet academic year within the new normality”

Parents and guardians who accompanied their children on the first day of school, on Brava Island, say they are confident, in a “calm” school year, within the new normality”, which covid-19 imposes on the education system.

Carlos Araújo, one of the guardians who went to take his son on the first day of school, said he was satisfied with the measures he saw implemented, regarding hand hygiene, spaces and the transparency of information passed on by teachers, both for students as for parents.

According to Carlos Araújo, expectations are the best, thinking of a “successful year”, provided that, in addition to health and educational authorities working to prevent the spread and contamination of covid-19, parents and guardians collaborate in this fight for of better education on the island.

Also, Vanusa Monteiro, mother and guardian, said that whenever a new school year begins, expectations are always high, but this year, as it is an "atypical" year and that requires new challenges, expectations and concerns are even bigger.

However, he said he believed that with the collaboration of the entire educational community and vigilance, mainly by parents on the home/school/home route and provided that the virus continues without reaching the island, it is possible to obtain “good results at the end of this new academic year that started today”.

The director of the Eugénio Tavares School and responsible for the Nova Sintra group, David Pascoal Fernandes, considered that the year started with “tranquility”, but it was necessary to make, first, some readaptations to welcome children, adolescents and young people, for a academic year “without major surprises and with a guarantee of biosafety”.

As it is the only island that has not yet registered positive cases of covid-19, in Brava the classes will take place in the “traditional” way with only the reduction of intervals, which leads the person in charge to believe that there is everything to be a “good year”, as long as everyone does their part.

Parents are asked to collaborate in the safety of their children, passing on information about the behaviors they should and should not have during this period, as well as the pedagogical follow-up that should always be done.

Amélia Maguy, pedagogical deputy director of the Nossa Senhora do Monte Basic School group, also made a positive assessment of the first day of classes, stressing that there was a participation of around 75 percent (%) of the students, and those in the first cycle were , for the most part, accompanied by parents or guardians.

With regard to the use of masks, it showed that all students aged 12 and over were properly equipped and even those in the first cycle, where the use of masks is not mandatory, the majority presented masks.

In this sense, he asks parents to continue with this dynamic and to “accompany their children in this battle for their greater and better success”.

For this academic year, the delegate advanced to Inforpress, that the numbers are around 1,300 students, but that they still cannot say with all precision because there are students who will enroll after the beginning of the academic activities.
