CVMA 2023: Artists with “public misconduct” will not be nominated

The organization of the CVMA informed today in Praia that artists whose public behavior and music are associated with “condemnable” social scourges, especially the consumption of drugs, alcohol and incitement to violence, will not be nominated this year.

These statements were made by the Director of Communication for Cabo Verde Music Aword (CVMA), at a press conference, having announced that the pre-nominated figure had been eliminated and the nominees would be known on April 1st, at a gala held in the United States of America. America, Brockton.

“The CVMA introduced the artist's conduct for this year. We have the responsibility of being the official music award in Cape Verde, so it didn't make sense not to be aligned with what Cape Verde advocates. Here we wanted to put into regulation what is sacred to us, which is in some way consecrating artists who have a social conduct in line with the values that the CVMA advocate”, explained Soraia de Deus.

The official explained that artists, whose public conduct or whose songs and messages are associated with the consumption of drugs, alcohol, incitement to violence, among other phenomena and “condemnable” social scourges, should not be considered for nomination.

On the other hand, he communicated that for this, which will be the 12th edition of the CVMA, 17 categories will be nominated, noting that the best artist on stage category was retaken due to the massive return of performances in the previous year.

There was also the introduction of the category Other Rhythms, which presupposes all the rhythms that until now were not enshrined within the CVMA, namely fusion rhythms, jazz rock, Afropop were included in the Afrobeat / Afrohouse category, album of the year, female performer and male performer who will have four nominations each.

According to it, in addition to the Popular Song of the Year, which is entirely voted by the public, the Song of the Year category voted by the juries was introduced and five honorable mentions will be awarded.

The usual body of judges will give way this year to the CVMA Academy, made up of personalities, directly and indirectly linked to Cape Verdean music or other sectors representative of the artistic and cultural community of society, namely, media, arts and event production, producers , publishers, music agents and musicians.

As listed by Soraia de Deus, the CVMA Academy comprises around 40 personalities from all walks of the music industry, from Cape Verde and from the various diasporas.

"It will be up to the Academy to indicate the nominees by category, three in most categories, four in the categories of Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Female Performer, Male Performer and then vote on the winners", underlined the CVMA Director of Communication.

The Popular Song of the Year category will be entirely public-voted, online, and the Artist on Stage and Breakthrough Artist categories will be partially public-voted, online.

As for the presentation gala of the nominees, which will be in the United States of America, Soraia de Deus considers that it is a way to take Cape Verde music further and internationalize it more and more.
