Dengue in Cape Verde: 1,205 Cases Registered in 2024
Health authorities (CDC Africa) reported that, since the beginning of the year, 1,205 cases of dengue fever had been recorded on nine islands in the archipelago. Of these cases, 562 were confirmed and 643 are considered suspicious. To date, there are no reports of deaths from dengue fever in Cape Verde in 2024.
The current cases represent a continuation of the disease outbreak reported in November 2023. With the new cases, the total number of dengue infections in Cape Verde in 2024 reaches 1,422 , of which 755 are confirmed. It is worth noting that 52% of the cases registered so far are female and 22% involve people aged between 10 and 19 years old.
According to health authorities, the predominant serotype of the dengue virus in Cape Verde this year is DENV3. However, cases of DENV1 have also been recorded.
Prevention Measures:
Health authorities recommend that the population take precautionary measures to prevent the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue fever. Among the measures are:
- Eliminate mosquito breeding sites: Clean gutters, cover barrels and water tanks, remove standing water from tires and other containers.
- Use mosquito repellent: Apply mosquito repellent to exposed areas of the skin, especially during the day.
- Wear clothing that protects your skin: Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks outdoors.
- Install screens on doors and windows: Prevent mosquitoes from entering the home.
