Descendant of Cape Verdeans in the USA launches candidacy for state representative in District 58 in Pawtucket
Elizabeth Moreira was born in the United States, daughter of parents from the municipality of Santa Catarina, and today, at 34 years of age, she decided to run for state representative in RI House District 58 in Pawtucket to give back and represent the community.
In an interview with Inforpress, this candidate argued that “the residents of District 58 need an advocate who provides broad representation on the issues important to Fairlawn and Woodlawn, and who prioritizes their concerns every day.”
In this district, he made it known that around 40 percent (%) of residents identify themselves as Cape Verdeans, but that his intention is not to work only for the Cape Verdean community, but for everyone, as he has done on other occasions , although in different situations.
As Elizabeth Moreira said, since her childhood she was on the front line in this community, whether in the Catholic Church, or in the small daily activities she did at the meat market with her uncle, but her motivation to run for office was highlighted by the invitations he has received, as a result of his interventions in the health and social fields.
She recalled that during the covid-19 pandemic, she was the city's first director of public health and equity and that she is currently assistant health equity program officer at the Local Initiative Support Corporation Rhode Island, and is also one of the faces of the Health project CV that has brought various equipment and medical support to several islands in the country.
Through her work as director of public health and equity for the city, her volunteer efforts to coordinate health care for those most in need, and now providing technical assistance to stakeholders and public service agencies, she said she has demonstrated the ability leadership and ability to serve.
As her campaign guidelines, Elizabeth Moreira chose the issue of residence, housing, education, the search for more savings and working in a more inclusive community, with better opportunities, as the focal points.
This candidacy has been thought about for more than two years, when the candidate says she understood that District 58 needed better leadership, believing that just as she made her contribution and led during times of pandemic and crisis, it is possible to work with the population to have an increasingly better District.
“I believe it is possible, I am going to run a campaign that matches the work that will be carried out and all this strength comes from my supporters who are not only Cape Verdeans, but from all over and who live here”, said Elizabeth Moreira is convinced that on September 12th the results will be satisfactory.
However, he reminded the community that in addition to support, it is first necessary to register, explaining that the process runs until the 10th of August, and that “a citizen's first important mission is to vote, which shows their commitment to the community, allows it to elect its representative to have a voice at the municipal and state level”.
This candidate was named Person of the Year by the Pawtucket Hall of Fame in 2022 and the Pawtucket Foundation in 2023.
Elizabeth Moreira lives on Lorraine Street, in Pawtucket, saying that her family has established residence in Pawtucket since 1980, when her grandmother emigrated from Cape Verde with her 12 children, believing that leadership comes in her blood and DNA.
The first-generation American earned a master's degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services and a bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island.
