Qu Dongyu and José Maria Neves

The director general of FAO, Qu Dongyu, is in Cape Verde, where he has visited several of the organization's projects and programs in the areas of agriculture, livestock and fishing. During his stay on the island of São Vicente, the leader participated in a dialogue on the promotion of sustainable practices in the fishing and aquaculture sector.

Dongyu praised Cape Verde's advances in recent years, highlighting the training of staff in the area of combating desertification as an example to be followed throughout the African continent. However, the FAO director general also highlighted that the country still has a long way to go to reach its full economic potential.

"Cape Verde has the conditions to grow and become a reference in Africa", stated Dongyu. "But perhaps in ten years they will easily reach your GDP", he projected.

Dongyu's visit to Cape Verde is part of an agenda that includes meetings with government authorities and visits to projects on several islands in the archipelago. The objective is to strengthen the partnership between FAO and the Cape Verdean government, with a focus on the sustainable development of the agri-food sector.
