Exaggerated increase in the price of cement on Brava Island worries the population
City of Nova Sintra, January 16, 2023 (Bravanews) - The population of Ilha Brava, in Cape Verde, was surprised by a significant increase in the price of cement, generating concerns among local residents. Previously sold at 1,190 escudos per bag, the cement is now being sold at 1,265 escudos per bag, representing an increase of 6%.
This increase is not isolated, as other islands, such as Fogo Island, have also experienced increases in cement prices, although without the same exaggeration observed on Brava Island. On Fogo Island, the price per bag increased from 1,110 escudos to 1,160 escudos.
Residents express perplexity at these increases, questioning the reasons behind the constant elevations on Brava Island, which appear more pronounced compared to other regions. Some highlight the need for intervention by the competent authorities in Cape Verde to regulate this situation and protect citizens against excessively high prices.
The hope is that national authorities can investigate and address the causes of this exaggerated increase in the price of cement on Brava Island, ensuring that the population is not financially burdened. Citizens await effective action to guarantee economic stability and access to essential construction materials.
