Fishermen from Fajã D'Água appeal to the authorities to support the recovery of the trawler
Nova Sintra, September 3, 2024 — Fishermen in the small town of Fajã D'Água are facing serious difficulties due to the precarious condition of the only trawler in the region. According to locals, the trawler was severely damaged by the rains and adverse weather conditions, making the operation of dragging the boats practically impossible.
Local fishermen, who depend on the trawler to get their boats from the water to land and back, report that the deterioration of the structure has caused major disruption and losses. “Without the trawler in good condition, we are facing a huge challenge to maintain our daily activities and ensure our livelihood,” said João, one of the affected fishermen.
The community is urgently requesting help from local and regional authorities to repair the trawler. They are asking not only for a detailed assessment of the damage, but also for swift measures to be taken to restore the trawler’s functionality and prevent further economic and operational losses.
“Government and local authorities say they are investing in the fishing sector, but these investments have not yet reached the town of Faja D'Água,” said another fisherman.
The case highlights the importance of adequate infrastructure for fishing communities and the need for continued investment in the maintenance and recovery of essential equipment for the sector.
