Information provided by the Portuguese newspaper Abola reveals that Nilton Fernandes, known in football circles as Berrá, had been suffering from kidney cancer for some time and that the Portuguese Players' Union had launched, last February, a fundraising campaign to help with treatment.

Boavista de Portugal, the club where he formed, in a statement, deeply regrets the death of the former Cape Verdean international on seven occasions.

«Nilton Fernandes, who trained as an athlete at Boavista FC, played 16 games for the main team in the 1999/2000 season, three of which were in the Champions League», added the Portuguese checkered emblem.

In addition to Boavista, Nilton Fernandes played for Desportivo das Aves, Gil Vicente and Penafiel, all in the Portuguese first division championship.

He also represented Esposende, FC Marco and Salgueiros in Portugal, before leaving abroad, passing through Slovenia, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Israel, where he ended his career, in the 2011/12 season.
