Francisco Tavares, former Mayor of Brava criticizes the PAICV (opposition at the time) and praises the MPD's stance

Nova Sintra City, March 22, 2025 (Bravanews) - The former Mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the stance of the opposition African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) during his mandate, which lasted from 2012 to 2024 (Councillor and President of CMB). Tavares recalled that, for 12 years, the PAICV systematically voted against the activity plans and budgets presented by the City Council.

"Throughout my mandate, as a councillor and president of the CMB, the PAICV opposition has never shown any interest in collaborating in the development of Brava. They always voted 'no' to everything we proposed, without presenting constructive alternatives," said Tavares.

The former president contrasts the PAICV's attitude with that of the Movement for Democracy (MPD), which currently holds the majority in the Municipal Assembly. Tavares praised the MPD's decision to ask for the 2025 budget to be withdrawn so that improvements could be made, demonstrating, according to him, a commitment to the island's well-being.

"The MPD taught the PAICV a big lesson. Even with a majority, it didn't just approve a flawed budget. It demanded corrections and showed that it puts the Brava first," said Tavares.

The MPD's decision to request a review of the budget was motivated by the identification of "serious errors, illegalities, breaches of the AMB's regulations, gross inconsistencies and inadmissible and incomprehensible choices". Among the flaws pointed out were disparities in salaries between officials and a lack of clarity in the transition to the CMB's Private Staff.

After a long debate, the MPD presented solutions to the flaws identified and guaranteed that it would approve the budget if the corrections were implemented. The party's attitude was seen as an example of responsibility and commitment to transparency in public management.

Tavares made a point of recalling that, during his 12 years in office, the PAICV has always voted against the budgets presented by the City Council. "It's important for the people of Brava to know who really cares about the development of our island," concluded the former president.
