The government of Cape Verde announced today the definitive and free concession of 35 hectares of land to farmers and animal breeders on the island of Boa Vista, aiming to boost the agricultural sector.

The initiative will benefit 45 farmers and breeders, each receiving a plot slightly less than one hectare, in the agricultural perimeters of Povoação Velha, João Galego, Fundo das Figueiras and Cabeça dos Tarafes, according to a statement released by the Government.

"The lands will be transferred to farmers and animal breeders who already carry out activities in these areas, with the aim of boosting the development of agriculture and livestock in the country," stated the statement.

The lack of rain is one of the main difficulties for the primary sector in Cape Verde, although studies have identified business opportunities in supplying the tourism sector, which is expanding and imports the majority of products served to customers.

The process for granting the plots was based on a detailed survey of local agricultural realities and the definition of eligibility criteria for beneficiaries, verified by the General Directorate of Heritage and Public Contracting (DGPCP).

"The Government hopes to create better conditions for sustainable agricultural and livestock development, which promotes sustainable economic growth, the elimination of poverty and the promotion of food security in the country", concluded the statement.
