“We don’t know why we waited so long to schedule the elections. Some say it’s to give time to the councils that still need to work to present the project, but we understand that the Government is managing the issue of announcing the election date according to its interests,” he said.

Rui Semedo made these considerations during a press conference to present the candidates of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV - opposition), for the Municipal Councils of Maio and Santa Catarina do Fogo, in the 2024 local elections.

“Also because, to give the Prime Minister time to visit all the islands, all the municipalities, inaugurate the works that still need to be inaugurated or announce new works, as he has been doing, using public resources to travel to the islands, to campaign in favor of his local government candidates, he needs this time”, accused the leader of the largest opposition party, informing, at the same time, that the date set for the PAICV hearing, within the scope of these elections, is September 9th.

“Imagine that only from that point on can we have an idea of what the election date will be, creating difficulties for candidates, who would have to organize according to the date, but also creating difficulties for the institution that organizes the elections, which needs to have a predictable framework to organize the entire electoral process. Therefore, we do not understand this delay by the Government in announcing the date of the next local elections,” he commented.
