The Government will officially launch, in November, the rehabilitation works of the two houses of Eugénio Tavares on Ilha da Brava, announced today the Minister of Culture and Creative Industries, Abraão Vicente.

On the day that Culture and Communities Day is celebrated, under the motto “I-génio: from legacy to fiction”, the official visited the exhibition and sales of short stories and poetry books by Eugénio Tavares, at the National Library of Cabo Verde, and participated in a conversation about the patron, at the Palace of Culture.

“This year we celebrate with the great news that in November we will officially launch the rehabilitation works of the two houses of Eugénio Tavares, both the house that is the Museum house and the retreat house that is in an inaccessible place on the island of Brava. We were able to frame the two houses within the axes of the PRAA”, he informed.

Abraão Vicente also said that next year the Government will deliver several structural works carried out within the scope of the rehabilitation plan for historic buildings, namely the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church, the Nossa Senhora da Luz Church and the reconstruction of the Church of Santiago Norte.

He also added that the rehabilitation of the National Library of Cape Verde, the Jorge Barbosa National Auditorium and the Mindelo Cultural Center are planned.

He recalled that the country currently has a number of works valued at around eight million euros “in heritage rehabilitation alone”.

The National Culture Day, which three years ago adopted the motto “Culture in the heart of the islands”, proposes for this year a plot around Eugénio Tavares.

One hundred and fifty years after his birth, according to the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, “there is still much to discover and rediscover” about Eugénio Tavares.

In this sense, also to mark the date, 15 municipalities in the country will hold a “Serenata Cabo Verde” to evoke, today, the patron of the day of Culture, Eugénio Tavares.
